First USB dock you're not sacrificing quality for convenience! November 10, 2009 Christopher Page (Louisville, KY United States) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I felt compelled to leave my first review ever (despite being a weekly Amazon customer). This dock is AMAZING. I'm testing it with both a Dell Studio XPS 13 and their new Dell Latitude Z. Both are great notebooks, but without a docking station option (OK, the Z has a wireless docking station for the price of a car), that was a potential deal killer for the office.
Enter the Dynadock U. Installation was flawless and painless:
1) Downloaded and installed Windows 7 Beta driver from [...],
2) Plugged all devices into Dynalink (24" 1920x1200 monitor, Bose surround speakers, Ethernet, iPhone USB dock),
3) Plugged Dynalink into laptop.
The device drivers all loaded successfully, and after a reboot, everything worked. Windows even remembered my external monitor placement and settings. Seriously, it just plain worked. I was amazed.
My experience so far? It's the first USB dock that'll drive my 1920x1200 DVI monitor. Now remember, EVERYTHING is going through a 480Mbs (max) USB port, so I expected hi definition digital video to be terrible. Not so at all! There IS noticable (millisecond) lag when you're quickly dragging windows around the desktop, or during some desktop animations like minimizing windows, but absolutely NO hinderance to using standard Office/Internet apps. To my surprise I am able to watch DVDs and YouTube videos full screen on my external display, EVEN YouTube HD videos, with NO lag or skipping. I was shocked! I have NOT tried playing a graphics intensive game through it, nor have I tried streaming a 720p or 1080p movie file through it. At 1920x1200 I expect it would certainly choke at that point, but if you're doing either of those things, just plug your monitor directly into your computer and problem solved. That's not what the dock is for, especially at that resolution.
I've been streaming audio all day without a skip. On the Bose system, it does sound like I'm getting a little less bass when I hook it up analog, but sounds perfect when I use the digital (optical) audio out. The bass thing may be just me, I haven't done extensive testing. UPDATE: it uses a different audio control panel, and once I found that and adjusted the equalizer, the bass is where it should be.
It looks great and the construction is solid, very stable sitting on its base even with numerous cables running out behind it. Undocking is a breeze: just click "Eject Dock" in the Windows Taskbar and 5-10 seconds later (depending on how many devices you have connected) you're good to go. Reconnect the USB cable and everything fires back up the way it should.
I've read the other reviews here where some folks have experienced some quirky behavior. Not sure how much of that is older drivers, an older operating system, or an older PC. While I have certainly have not exhaustively tested ever possible device or scenario, I've tested every use I purchased it for, and it works beautifully.
Hope that helps! It's the best universal USB dock I've ever tested... You won't be disappointed!
Works great for us! February 5, 2009 Cathie (Mount Sterling, Cayman Islands) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Bought this to manage new Toshiba laptop with ergonomic keyboard and flat screen monitor. Everything worked great. Looks nice on the desk and has plenty of ports. I would recommend. By the way, it was less expensive at Amazon.com than anywhere else we looked.
Dynadock U works great April 27, 2009 Chalupa (California) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought the Dynadock U for a Sony Vaio notebook computer. Everything has worked great. The digital video port works better than I expected. I have a 19" ViewSonic LCD monitor, Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard, wireless Logitech mouse, and Klipsch speaker system all connected to the Dynadock U. Everything works great and looks good. The docking and undocking work as advertised, no problems. The software has some nice features to help set everything up.
Perfect addition October 23, 2009 Cryogenic Stasis J (IRAQ WAR ZONE) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I recv'd the item in new condition. Delivery was very fast.
I needed a device to eliminate my horrible clutter around my laptop. Every port was filled and I had no space to even move around the mouse for all the cables snaking around my makeshift desk (I'm deployed US military). It was getting ridiculous.
I came across SAME ITEM at TigerDirect for 40 dollars more than Amazon's price, so I immediately jumped on it and I'm glad I did.
I re-arranged my entire desk space in the hopes I had found , at least , an answer to the sea of crawling cables and clutter that was already way out of control.
I was right on with this purchase:
Install was FAST and easy.
I plugged in two 1TB hdd's , one 2TB hdd, my DSL line, and the receiver for my external wireless trackball device. I still had two ports leftover!!! (in the front) After the install I connected the dock and WAH_BAM!!! The magic happened! everything mounted SMOOTHLY and the internet was all connected, no issues at ALL> I noticed that its sound card took precedence over the one in my laptop, hence muting the laptop altogether. Big deal. Just plugged my headphones into the dock and it sounds great! Later I used external speakers and I'm rocking it now! I have not tried the DVI out.
This thing takes up SO LITTLE space. About the footprint of a bottled water. It is SO NICE to come home to a clutter-free desk space now! I love this thing ! It is the best peripheral I've ever owned. It made my life easier, and added some power and capability to my home PC life. I'm very very happy with it . Highly recommend it for it's SMALL SIZE , ease of use, cool sounds ,reliablity, and sleek design.
Toshiba Dynadock U, Toshiba Satellite P25 Laptop (2002?), & Windows 7 October 18, 2009 Eric Ruth (Phoenix, AZ USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have this installed on an older Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7. My Video card is too old to allow Windows 7 to run the Video Driver for the Dynadock. It's a Windows 7 interface issue within an old computer, nothing wrong with 7 or the Dynadock. For being an old computer running with a brand new Operating System (7) I was expecting all sorts of glitches and issues with the Dock and my computer. I can honestly say that I have had none and it performs with rock solid stability on a system setup that is seriously pushing the envelope of compatibility. I've been very impressed and can't see why it wouldn't be a rock solid runner on any system, and with a more current Video Card, the video would operate as it's supposed to I'm sure. I'm in IT and knowing why the 7yr old video card and Windows 7 won't support the Dynadock video, I can tell you that there is no reason it wouldn't work in XP or Vista with the older card without a hitch. I recommend this product for anyone that uses their laptop in a main computing setting to keep it mobile. I have 2 external hard drives, external DVD, speakers, 2nd monitor, USB keyboard & USB mouse, Scanner, Printer, Webcam, & ethernet cable for internal network hookup. Now I just push the undock button, yank the docks single USB, & it's back to a laptop. (Yes, my set up makes me pluck the vga plug from the laptop too, but I'm a rare situation, you get the gist I'm sure.) I had stopped using my laptop as a laptop because it just took too long to unhook it and hook it back up. Now I take it everywhere again. I highly recommend this product.
